Calliope's Red Greek
Calliope's Red Greek
We were given this fig by a distant in-law. His mother (Calliope) brought the original cuttings from Kardamyli on the Peloponnese, Sparta, Greece. They have been growing this fig in-ground in Michigan for 50+ years. Every fall they cut it way back, bind it, push it over and bury it a trench. It grows great in pots too. The "real" Greek name is unknown.
It's a red fig outside and pink/yellow on the inside. The leaves are dark green and thick. Calliope's Red Greek figs look great when trained to grow in tree form.
Its a very sweet and very productive fig. We can taste papaya, Honeydew melon and watermelon. Pick them when they are slightly soft for the most flavor.
It produces one crop early in the summer and one in the early fall. The early crop is long and the late crop is round and squat.
Available in 5 gallon nursery containers Spring/Summer 2022
