Battaglia
Battaglia
This fig was discovered by Sandy Battaglia in Virginia Beach, Virginia. An Italian couple brought the original cuttings from Italy. Sandy was able to take cuttings before the couple sold their home. The new owners cut down the original tree. Sandy brought her trees to Sally Mays who at the time owned Paradise Nursery in Virginia Beach. For many years Sally sold this variety. The "real" name is unknown. Sally closed Paradise Nursery in 2006 and she is now selling her personal farm where one of the last original remaining trees resides.
During a hot summer the figs will start to ripen in mid to late August and will continue until the frost here in North Jersey. It's a beautiful and very productive fig. It grows great in pots. Give it full sun and heat for best flavor.
The flavor is rich and to me it tastes like strawberry jam. It is one of the best figs we have tasted.
