An ancient fig, “A Sangue” or “Blood”, is a medium to large green/yellow round fig with a dark red interior. It originates from the Brindisi and Valle d'Itria regions of Italy. Please see the map in the photos.

*Our experience here in New Jersey, after growing this fig for a few years, is that A Sangue can hold figs to maturity. We have now seen A Sangue does not require the fig wasp (Blastophaga psenes). A Sangue is parthenocarpic. After having dropped it’s figs for a couple seasons we had previously written A Sangue is not, however, it has been shown that it will produce figs in northern New Jersey without being fertilized by the wasp. We presume for those customers living where Blastophaga psenes does thrive, for example certain regions California, A Sangue would be most suitable.
